From page two of Google to quoted by the AI engines.
A beauty e-commerce store sat mid-page-two of Google, average position around 17, and was completely absent from AI search. Organic was an afterthought. A year of structured SEO and answer-engine work later, it was ranking around position 5.5, cited across every major AI engine, and organic had become its number-one revenue channel.

The plan
Page-two rankings get almost no clicks, and “invisible in AI answers” is the new page two. The plan worked three layers at once: technical and on-page foundations so Google could actually understand and trust the catalog; content and internal linking to build topical authority around the categories that sell; and answer-engine optimization so the AI engines would quote the store, not just the competitors. Each layer reinforced the next, technical trust let the content rank, the content earned the authority, and that authority is exactly what the AI engines weigh when they decide whom to cite.
The execution
- Fixed the foundations, clean site architecture, product and FAQ schema, fast pages, and rich-result-eligible product markup so listings could win snippets.
- Built topical depth, category and buying-guide content mapped to real search demand, tightly interlinked so authority flowed to the money pages.
- Optimized for answers, not just rankings, concise, extractable passages (definitions, comparisons, how-to-choose) that AI engines can cite verbatim.
- Grew the authority signals, references and brand mentions that both Google and the AI engines weigh.
What the numbers did
Average Google position climbed from 16.8 to about 5.5, off page two and into the click zone, with roughly 115 keywords landing in the top three. Those top-three positions are what actually convert, and stacking ~115 of them is what turned organic from a trickle into the store’s largest channel. The site is now a cited source across Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok on 30+ pages. The channel shift showed up plainly in the analytics: organic went from an afterthought to the store’s top revenue channel.
The takeaway
SEO in the AI era is two jobs, not one: rank in the blue links and get quoted in the answers. Do both and organic stops being a cost center, it becomes the channel that compounds while you sleep.
“Organic went from an afterthought to our #1 revenue channel, and now the AI engines quote us.”
